In my self-portrait, I explore my identity as Maria, as a Pisces, and a child of Yahweh. I layered underwater teal to evoke the original concept of performing this piece in a pool, embodying myself confronting the Leviathan. Due to the change in weather, I shifted to a more grounded, earthbound setting.

The white veil I wear represents both purity and imperfection, serving as protection and revelation. It embodies the duality we all carry—I am lifting the veil. The black painted across my palm symbolizes the unseen: the mysteries we cannot grasp with the natural eye. As Romans 1:19-20 says, “The invisible can be clearly seen by the things that are made.”

The marks on my face, which never left a scar but caused deep pain, together with the veil and the black on my palm, reflect an alchemy of acceptance—the merging of matter and spirit.

I come from a long line of “back seat” women. Women that paved the way for their husbands, kids, and community.

Members of the church, school, soup kitchen, farm, gardens, and worked themselves to death. Were SERVED never, and always ate last.

But were the REAL captains of the ship 🚢 So many women didn’t make the history books but made history in our hearts ❤️‍🔥‼️💯

For my assignment, I created a new line for Louis Vuitton’s New Spring-Summer Line. 🔥💖💃🏽

My line captures a moment of a refined woman boarding a luxury train. She moves through the world with the same impact as the revolutionaries before her. Enjoying gourmet dishes, with every bite being a testament to her cultivated taste. Her pen captures the timeless epics that leave her speechless. She dresses in luxurious comfort, embracing a lifestyle that unfolds as effortlessly as the turning pages of her story.

My new line connects to Louis Vuitton’s current jet-setter aesthetic, while offering a fresh perspective on luxury travel. Instead of a woman boarding a luxury plane, she is now embracing slow, intentional travel by train, evoking a more romantic, introspective, and cultured experience. The buckles and buttons reference structured tailoring, workwear, and historical uniforms—perhaps a nod to the labor force that built America. The incorporation of metallics, deep leathers, and intricate fastenings, channel the mechanical, industrial feel of 19th-century railroad workers, transformed into high fashion.

My Reparations line brings a deep cultural, political, and artistic edge to Louis Vuitton’s previous high-end line. By centering an African American woman in an experience of luxury, reflection, and storytelling. When creating this, I wanted to give a powerful narrative of reclamation, wealth, and self-determination. #academyofartuniversity #fashionschool #fashion
